- Go to the water meter box and open the lid.
- Inspect the water meter closely and find the reading numbers and flow indicator.
- The numbers are read from left to right, including the stationary zero at the end. For example: The reading on the gallon meter shown below is 0001960 gallons. Notice that the stationary zero is added to the end of the 196.
- If the water meter registers in cubic feet (ccf), subtract the new reading from the previous reading on your water bill and multiply the result by 7.48 to convert the consumption to gallons. (Ex: 100 ccf x 7.48 gal/ccf = 748 gallons)
- The flow indicator rotates when water flows through the meter. If all water appliances in the home are turned off and this indicator still rotates, there is water being lost somewhere on the house side of the meter. It is the customer’s responsibility to repair leaks on the house side of the meter.

- Missing meter box lid
- Water in the meter box
- Meter flow indicator does not rotate when water flows through the meter
- Cracks on the register's glass or plastic cover, or if it is scratched and unreadable
Please make sure the water meter is not covered with brush or parked cars. Also, the meter must be accessible (e.g. location is behind a fence) to ensure timely and accurate billing. If shrubs and other landscaping are installed around the water meter, BexarMet is NOT responsible for damage to the plants or landscaping if repairs to the meter area are required.
