History of BexarMet

History of BexarMet

Bexar Metropolitan Water District was established in 1945 by the Texas Legislature as a governmental agency with the power to “control, conserve, protect, preserve, distribute and utilize” water within its service area. BexarMet was created as an agency governed by a board of seven directors directly elected by the citizens it serves. BexarMet still functions as its own self-governed agency independent of municipal and county governments. BexarMet customers have an unprecedented level of control over their water service provider through each district’s elected board member. BexarMet welcomes customers to make comments, suggestions or even run for the Board of Directors.

Traditionally, BexarMet has provided service to areas in the greater San Antonio region that have been underserved by other water providers. Today, BexarMet has a diverse service area encompassing areas on the south, north, east and west sides of San Antonio. The BexarMet service area has grown dramatically from its initial 1945 service area which contained only 4,765 residential connections. Today, BexarMet's customer base contains approximately 87,000 residential and commercial accounts, providing water to over 260,000 people in Bexar, Medina, Comal and Atascosa counties.
