Jose "Joe" Gallegos, Jr. - Director - District 1

Jose “Joe” Gallegos, Jr. was born and raised in San Antonio’s West-Side attending local public schools, graduating in 1971 from Fox Tech High School. He enrolled at San Antonio College and majored in P.E., after transferring to Our Lady of the Lake College he earned a Bachelor’s in Social Work degree in 1977. In 1979 he earned an Advanced Master’s in Social Work, while there he received a Minorities in Education Fellowship and was featured in Who’s Who in America Colleges and Universities, and Outstanding Young Men of America.

Some of the positions he has held include State Director for Texans’ War on Drugs, Program Administrator for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, State Adult Probation Officer, Project Coordinator for Urban Training Project (HUD), and Executive Director for Adelante Inc., respectfully. He is currently employed as a Social Worker/Advocate consultant.

He is a long time democrat, currently serving on the Bexar County Executive Committee representing Precinct 1013 as its precinct chairperson. In 1995 and again in 1997 he ran for the city council seat in District 5. He has served in various Democratic committees and organizations at the local, state and national level. Jose has resided in BexarMet District 1 for over ten years.

Jose attends St. John Berchman’s Catholic Church, where he served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, ACTS Board Member, Finance Committee Member and is currently enrolled in the Catholic Archdiocese Lay Minister Program.

Civic involvements include membership in the city’s:

• Gang Task Force,
• Neighborhood Development,
• San Antonio Chamber’s Leadership Program

Jose was elected to the BexarMet Board of Directors in November 2003 and represents District 1.  He currently serves on the Board's Real Estate committee.
