Take Advantage of Winter Averaging!
It is important for all of us to use water efficiently. During the winter months, this can have an added bonus for residential accounts: lower water bills. The Winter Averaging Period begins November 15 and ends March 15. Annual sewer rates are based on a three month average monthly consumption during these months. This time period is used because historically this is when the customer does little outside watering. In other words, this gives a true picture of water consumption that is less likely impacted by heavy outdoor usage. All indoor water use goes into the sewer and is treated; making it logical to determine rates by this method. The monthly billing, depending on consumption, may go down in cost compared to previous years, but it will not fluctuate from month to month.
BexarMet bills may reflect a number of charges in addition to your true water consumption. Those charges, such as sewer, garbage, or governmental charges are collected by BexarMet and then passed on to the appropriate agency or municipality. In other words, BexarMet acts as the pass-through agent for these other charges. BexarMet does not establish the rates for those other charges. The rates are established by the agency or municipality. Water and System Improvement Fee are the only two items that are your water charges.
The amount of water you use during the winter averaging forms the basis for your residential account sewer charges during the next year. The average is recalculated each year during November 15 to March 15.
Here are some tips to reduce water consumption:
- Check and repair leaks.
- Install water-saving devices like low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators and toilets.
- Set your sprinkler system on manual and only water when there is no rain for prolonged periods.
- Do not leave water running when washing or rinsing dishes.
- Wash only full loads of clothes and dishes.
- Do not let water run while brushing your teeth.
- Water lawn only when necessary.
- Use a rake or broom to clean the driveway, sidewalks, and gutters.
Being water-wise can save you money not only on your water bill, but you realize more green in your pocket!
